REBATES - MEDICARE BETTER OUTCOMES
Your counselling sessions are supported by Medicare when you have a referral, in the form of a Mental Health Care Plan, from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician.
To obtain a referral you will need to make an appointment with your GP to complete a Mental Health Care Plan. It is important to tell the doctor’s receptionist that you want a referral to Synergy Counselling Services as the GP needs approximately 30 minutes to discuss the plan with you.
You will need to supply your doctor with the following information about Synergy Counselling Services:

Medicare Reporting Requirements
Under the Medicare Better Outcomes Scheme with a Mental Health Care plan the client is entitled to 10 psychological services per calendar year. There is a capacity to seek an additional 6 sessions under Exceptional Circumstances.
Under the Medicare Better Outcomes Scheme it is a requirement that a written report be sent to the referring medical practitioner at the completion of the 6th and 10th session no matter where they fall within the calendar year. At the completion of the 6th and 10th session a review will be held with regards to progress and plan for further intervention, if required, prior to a report being completed. You shall be sent a copy of the report being sent to the referring GP for your own records. At the time of receiving this report it is a recommendation that you make a time with your GP to review progress. Continuation of the service cannot occur without a review occurring between referred client and the referring GP.
Synergy is an ATAPS Provide for Standard, Perinatal and Kids in Mind referrals via Bayside Medicare Local and Frankston Mornington Peninsula Medicare Local.
Through ATAPS, patients are eligible for a maximum of 12 sessions per calendar year - six time-limited sessions with an option for a further six sessions following a mental health review by the referring GP. ATAPS provides patients with assistance for short-term intervention.
Patients are not to be referred for treatment through the Medical Benefits Schedule (Better Access) Program and ATAPS at the same time. Treatment through both Better Access and ATAPS may occur within one calendar year, provided the total number of services provided under both programs does not exceed the maximum allowable in a calendar year.
There is an eligibility criteria for ATAPS. If you meet the criteria your GP submits a referral and Mental Health Care Plan to your Medicare Local.
